Making the Wayne County Fair a bit more special

Senior Citizen Day and Stroller Day exist at the Wayne County Fair to encourage inclusion and comfort for all community members.

While the senior discount has been with the fair for a long time, the stroller day is a more recent and necessary addition. Both, however, have the same purpose: fewer crowds and more accessibility to the entertainment and rides.

"The senior citizen day is on the last day of the fair. Up until 4 o'clock, seniors can get in free… It's also a day that's not that crowded and the seniors can get around," explained Pete Armstrong, treasurer and secretary for the Wayne County Fair Board. "Parking, of course, is always an issue here. But once they get in here, at least they can get through the buildings and see things that maybe they didn't get to look at."

Senior Citizen Day will be Thursday, Sept. 16, this year, and Stroller Day will be Tuesday, Sept. 14, from noon to 4 p.m. There will be unlimited kiddie rides for $7 during that time. Children 6 and under are always admitted free.

"It seems like every year the stroller day has worked real well for us," Armstrong continued.

Moreover, since Wayne County Schools Day is Monday, Sept. 13, and usually very crowded, parents, grandparents and little ones in strollers will be able to enjoy the fair more comfortably on Stroller Day.

"I guess the stroller day is a good day for moms to bring their smaller kids. Only kiddie rides are open and the bigger kids aren't there," added Bob Winkler, vice president of the Wayne County Fair Board.

Ultimately, special days make the fair extra special for these two groups, because no one should have to miss out on that sweet combination of cotton candy, animals and a Ferris wheel.
