Career center students advance to state competition

Nineteen Wayne County Schools Career Center business students will advance to Business Professionals of America state competition in Columbus March 17 and 18 following high placement at the Region 8 WorkSkills competitions.

The top six students in each category received medals, and state qualifiers received plaques during the award ceremony. Wayne County Schools Career Center hosted the event for the eight region schools at Grace Brethren Church in Wooster.

The following students will advance to state:

Economic research – Brent Meininger, Wooster, first; Entrepreneurship – Sam Young, Norwayne, first; Fundamental accounting – Ashlee Rowe, Northwestern, first; Fundamental word processing – Rachael Steffen, Central Christian, first; Global marketing team – Kaitlyn Karickhoff and Shalie Winters, both of Northwestern, first; Keyboarding – Drew Brenner, Orrville, third; Presentation management individual, Christopher Graves, Wooster, first; Desktop publishing – Alyssa Edwards, Smithville, third; Economic research team – Tia Fry and Magdalena Volke, both of Waynedale, first; Financial analyst team – Samantha Shockley and London Weiser, both of Northwestern, first; Human resource management – Breanna Hershberger, Waynedale, first; Interview skills – Monique Overstreet, Wooster, first; Presentation management team – Ashley Lewis, Jade Eash, both of Orrville, first; Small business management – Jenna McGuire, Rittman; Olivia McMorrow, Wooster, first.

The following qualified for state, but chose a different contest: desktop publishing, Meininger, first; keyboarding, Karickhoff, second.

Insurance concepts – Allyson Kopina, Wooster, first; Management marketing/human resources – Young, first, and Shelby Cutright, Northwest (Stark), second; Parliamentary procedures – Kirstie Kandel, Smithville, first, Cheyenne Heilman, Rittman, second, and Weiser, third; Entrepreneurship - Rebecca Maibach, Heritage Private, second, and Cutright, third; Prepared speech - Rowe, second; Banking & finance - Corri Musselman, Dalton, third, Shockley, fourth, and Graves, sixth; Interview skills - Kelsey Grifo, Wooster, third, and Kandel, sixth; Presentation management team – Brenner and Jordan Ray, Orrville, third; Advanced spreadsheet - Kopina, fourth; Basic office systems – Volke, fourth; Fundamental word processing – Young, fourth; Desktop publishing – Winters, fifth; Financial math - Haylie Messner, Wooster, fifth, and Hershberger, sixth; Fundamental spreadsheet – Maibach, fifth; Graphic design promotion - Steffen, fifth; Prepared speech - Brandy Williams, Dalton, fifth; Medical office procedures - Overstreet, eighth.

Region 8 schools include Buckeye Career Center, New Philadelphia; Canton South High School; GlenOak High School, North Canton; Lake High School, Uniontown; R.G. Drage Career Center, Massillon; Sandy Valley High School; Washington High School, Massillon; and the Wayne County Schools Career Center.

The workplace skills assessment program is an integral part of Business Professionals of America. The goal of the program is to provide all business students with the opportunity to demonstrate workplace skills learned through business education curricula. Students will demonstrate occupational competencies; broaden knowledge, skills, and attitudes; expand leadership and human relation skills; demonstrate a competitive spirit, and receive recognition.

The Wayne County students are from business and marketing technologies and medical office management, with instructors Mary Lou Lisic and Janice Anderson, respectively.
