Judith was born Feb. 5, 1941, in Millersburg, to the late Glen and Florence VanSickle. She attended Millersburg Schools, graduating in 1959. She graduated from the Adult Nursing Program at the Muskingum Joint Vocational School in 1970 and continued her education at Ohio University, Zanesville Campus.
Judy was a traffic manager for WHIZ Radio, Zanesville, and was secretary for the Eastern Regional Office for Travelodge Corporation. She was a part of the nursing staff at Good Samaritan Hospital and worked for Drs. Robert Martin, H.C. Letson, and G.M. Kope for 28-and-a-half years and Drs. Carl Minning, Temperley, and Melick for four years. She also worked part-time for the Holmes County Public Library Killbuck Branch.
She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Millersburg, where she was baptized, went through confirmation, and was married. She was a former member of St. John’s of Zanesville, where she was on church council, a member of the choir, the Lutheran Church Women, Christ’s Table, a Sunday school teacher, and a formation of nursery school. Judy was elected member of Ohio Synod executive board Lutheran Church of America for 10 years, board of director member at Osterlen services for youth in Springfield, camping committee for Ohio Synod, summer teaching staff at Camp Mowana, and donor task force member of Ohio Synod Lutheran Church of America. She was a former member of St. Paul’s of Massillon and was a current member of Faith Lutheran Church, Millersburg.
Judy enjoyed her travels to Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and South Korea. One of the highlights of her life was when she was in the occupied city of West Berlin, Germany, where she traveled on a British troop train out of the west through the east sector into free Germany and returned for a visit after the city united with the east.
She was a member of the Wooster Chapter 270, Order of Eastern Star, and the Wooster chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolutionary War.
Surviving are children, Brian Ray (Joanna) Lawter of Misawa, Japan, and Julie Ann (Rick D.) Kuhn of Zanesville; four grandchildren, Janelle D. (Joe L.) Kuhn Phipps, Jessica R. Kuhn, Benjamin H. Lawter, and Joshua R. Lawter; siblings, Robert G. (Patricia) VanSickle of Merit Island, Fla., Richard E. (Mary Jean) VanSickle of Loudonville, Charles E. (Mary) VanSickle of Wooster, Patricia S. Stephan of West Lafayette, Sandra J. (Michael) Schmid of Berlin, Linda L. (Robert) Boyd of Kidron, and Lydia J. (Walter) Ramseyer of Millersburg; and many special nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends, Pastor Robert and Vickie Groenke, Camille Nowels, Margie Hershberger, Shawn Barnhart, and Shirley Gerber.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond L. Lawter, whom she married July 19, 1959; brothers, Albert T. VanSickle and Robert G. VanSickle; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Stephan.
Services will be held March 23, at 10:30 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Millersburg, with Pastor Robert Groenke officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg. Friends may call March 22, from 6-9 p.m., at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, and one hour prior to services at the church.
