Care for diabetic feet

Summertime brings out the bare feet and flip-flops. People who deal with the diagnosis of diabetes have a special concern regarding their fashionable feet. Bare feet and flip-flops can be dangerous.

Stepping on surfaces and jamming toes that cause damage to the skin of the feet is the biggest hazard of unprotected feet. The possibility of obtaining a cut or an injured toe can be a life changing event for someone who has diabetes. Mistreated open wounds can lead to amputation.

Uncontrolled blood sugar can cause the healing of any foot injury to become a bigger problem than it has to be. On July 21, at 7 p.m., the Dunlap Community Hospital Diabetes Depot will present a special program addressing the special needs of diabetic feet.

In conjunction with the Suppan Foot and Ankle Clinic, the Dunlap diabetes educators, Bobbie Randall, RD, LD, CDE and Dee Frank, RN, will outline the guidelines for healthy feet. A video and demonstration will be presented to remind those with diabetes how to assure their feet and toes continue to carry them throughout the summer and for the rest of their days. Caretakers and loved ones are encouraged to attend.
