Wayne County has a new treasurer.

During ceremonies before family, friends and colleagues at the Wayne County Administration Building on May 7, Dawn Zerrer was sworn in as Wayne County Treasurer.

Administering the oath of office was Wayne County Commissioner Jim Carmichael.

Zerrer succeeds Beverly Shaw, who in early April announced her intention to retire, effective April 29, in order to spend more time with her family.

Zerrer, who is a 14-year veteran of the department, was named acting treasurer in the interim between Shaw’s retirement and the naming of her permanent replacement.

When Shaw announced her intention to retire, the task of naming her replacement fell to the Wayne County Republican Party Central Committee.

According to Central Committee Chairman Jim Carmichael, the committee met on May 7 to formally select Zerrer to fill the post permanently.

“I’m really looking forward to working with her,” said Carmichael. “She’ll continue to be a real asset to the office.”

According to Carmichael, should Zerrer decide to seek the office beyond Shaw’s unexpired term, she would stand for election in the 2012 fall general election.
