The group traveled to the Sonnenberg Heritage Center in Kidron. Prudy Steiner welcomed the group. She gave the history of the center, which opened in 1994. There is a genealogical list of more than 6,000 names on their computer. This year’s special display is the Mennonite churches and institutions in the Kidron area. The group toured the Heritage Center following the business meeting.
President Harold Downey called the business meeting to order. He thanked Prudy for the opportunity to visit the Kidron Historical Society. A new roof and gutter are on the depot. The depot is getting the second coat of light gray paint and the trim will be a medium gray. The doll cabinet in the caboose is nearly done. The cabinet making equipment has been moved into the depot. It still needs to be arranged for display.
Smithville Heritage Days are June 18 and 19. SCHS is a co-sponsor. The buildings will be open both days. The Mishler Mill will be open from 1-5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The other buildings will be open from 2-7 p.m. on Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Volunteers are needed for the open houses. A variety of events are planned.
The target date for opening the caboose and depot is July 17. Paul Locher and Joe Irvin will have a book signing that day at the depot.
Wallace Lytle established an endowment fund for the Smithville Community Historical Society with the Wayne County Community Foundation. The earnings will be used for the society. Interested individuals can contribute to the endowment fund or start another one. The society received a grant from the Wayne County Foundation to update the educational wing of the Historic Church of God.
The historical society will not meet in July because the date would be July 4, a holiday. The next meeting will be a picnic at the home of Rex and Diane Miller on Monday, August 1. There will be an opportunity to tour their machinery and tool exhibits.
