One size definitely does not fit all. Not when it comes to vitamins, herbs, and natural dietary solutions to health issues. The answers seem as varied as the people walking down the street. This is something Miriam Hilty knows well. That’s a passion she brings to her new venture.

New Horizon Naturals is the new source in Millersburg for natural and organic foods, as well as vitamins and supplements. “It’s a complete line of natural and organic foods, vitamins and supplements,” Hilty said. “We have packaged foods, bulk foods, herbs, spices, everything natural and organic. A lot of it is for specific diets and allergies.”

For Hilty, manager of her family owned store, it’s all about improving people’s lives through natural means. Individual attention is a vital part of that. “I think one of the key things is, people coming in, and being able to talk to someone, and finding specific information, because if you go to just another store, you won’t be able to ask them specific questions regarding health needs. So I think in that aspect, we’re different. It’s really exciting to me when I hear about a product that has worked for someone.”

Their Grand Opening event, June 24-25, will be an excellent time to check out the new store. There will be free samples and drawings for gift baskets. They will also have food samples made with products from the store; cookies and other baked goods, as well as coffees and teas. All Nature’s Way products will be discounted, as well as other items.

Although her store is new, Hilty has more than 10 years experience in helping people find the right solution to their unique health issues. But she can quickly point to three things that many people could benefit from; A good multivitamin, omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics.

Eating right is still the ideal way to receive nutrition, according to Hilty. “If your diet is healthy, you’re getting a lot of vitamins and minerals from your food, and those are the best ones. But most people now aren’t getting the essential vitamins and minerals they need, and the multivitamin helps supplement that.” The omega-3 has a broad range of benefits, from cardiovascular health and attention deficit disorder, to improved joints and skin condition.

“A probiotic is especially beneficial if someone’s been taking antibiotics,” Hilty explained, “because antibiotics will kill both the bad bacteria and the good bacteria. Your body has good bacteria and bad bacteria, and the live cultures in probiotics will build up the good bacteria that are in your system, and boost your immune system.”

Hilty talked about a family friend who was quite a hyperactive child, and after using fish oil, which contains omega-3, showed dramatically better attention span and ability to focus.

But her favorite story is about her father. “I think one of the biggest impacts using natural foods has been for my dad,” she said. “He was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure.” Instead of medication, his doctor gave him six months to change his diet, exercise, and get his condition under control. Two years later he is not using medication for his condition. Hilty’s personal experience with a simple diet change is dramatic too. “I always had constant headaches, and I would just pop a pill. But when I cut soda out of my diet, that’s when I noticed a big difference.”

When asked about her favorite products, she didn’t talk about herself. “I can fill the shelves with stuff that I like, but it’s not about me, it’s about what the customers want. My goal is just to help customers find what they’re looking for. There’s nothing I like better than personal testimonies.”

One of the biggest growth areas they see is gluten free products. New Horizon Naturals has an array of items that can be used for gluten free cooking and baking.

There’s much more available than what’s seen on the shelves. The staff is happy to special order a product for a customer if they don’t have it on the shelf. They also offer discounts on preordered cases, making it an even better value. Mail orders are available as well.

The Grand Opening will be Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25.
