Thanks to the generosity of the members of the Wooster Emblem Club, a new 25-by-15 American flag will soon adorn the top of one of Wooster’s most iconic landmarks.
During the June 15 meeting of the Wayne County commissioners, Alta Bucher, Wooster Emblem Club president, and fellow club members Ardenna Hurt and Marita Maxwell presented the commissioners with a new American flag for the courthouse.
According to Bucher, the June 15 gift to the citizens of Wayne County marked the 35th flag the club has provided to the county for the courthouse, an endeavor that has cost the club more than $15,000 to undertake over the years.
“On behalf of the citizens of Wayne County we thank you for doing this,” said Wayne County Commissioner Scott Wiggam.
“Out of all of the buildings…and all the features that we have, this gets the most comments. People are looking at this flag and watching this flag and giving us calls on it because it’s so beautiful,” said Wiggam.
Providing flags for the Wayne County Courthouse is one of the many civic and charitable projects undertaken by the Wooster Emblem Club.
In addition to providing American flags to various local schools and businesses, since 1989 the group has presented a special flag program for local civic and school groups. The ceremony, which features eight flags that have symbolized our country since before its founding, presents flag history and etiquette.
