Sponsored by the Orrville Rotary Club, the 13th annual Firecracker 5K run and one mile fun run and walk gave the serious and the recreational runner alike a chance to take part in one of the most popular athletic competitions in the area.
According to Orrville Rotary Club member and event organizer Justin Haislip, more than 200 runners made their way to the start/finish line at Orrville Christian Church on North Elm Street to run the course that wound its way through the streets of Orrville.
Setting the pace with the fastest finish time in the 5K run was Matt McConnell, 20, of Apple Creek, with a time of 17:18.49. The top ladies finisher was Ashley Murral, 15, of Seville, with a time of 20:47.14.
The runners taking part in the 5K run and one mile fun run shared the course with competitors in the Orrville Chamber of Commerce Orrville Area Young Professionals Network Pump and Run weight lifting and running event.
Before lacing up their running shoes and taking to the streets of Orrville for a 5K run, the competitors in the Pump and Run event took part in a weight lifting competition.
The competitors, who were placed in different divisions based on the percentage of their body weight they were able to bench press, were able to reduce their run time by 30 seconds for each successful lift.
Taking top honors in the Pump and Run on the men’s side was Jim Patton, of North Ridgeville, with a net time of 5:15.09. Amy Chaudhary, of Saginaw, Mich., took home the prize for the ladies with a net time of 16:50.54.

The Orrville Rotary Club Firecracker 5K run and one mile fun run and the Orrville Area Young Professionals Network Pump and Run competition were part of a week of activities held in Orrville to celebrate Independence Day, including the Orrville Firefighters Association carnival, parade, fireworks display, cornhole tournament, twirling exhibition and the Fire in the Sky Fast Pitch Softball Tournament.
