The morning meeting of the Orrville Lions Club opened with Lions Kathi Bond and Rita Shisler sharing about their trip to the Lions International Convention in Seattle, Wash. early in July. Tam, the new Lions Club International president, shared his new vision of “I Believe” for the upcoming year. The Lions parade with delegates from around the world was the biggest parade ever held in Seattle. Speakers for the event included Bill Gates and Condoleezza Rice. Shisler and Bond said “we were proud to represent the Orrville Lions Club and be part of such a huge international event.”

In other club news, the next highway clean-up is scheduled for August 6, at 8 a.m. President Dino Carozza thanked all the Lions that participated in the Orrville parade and those that helped put the American flags up and take them down around town. The club welcomed guest Melissa Siburt, who is planning to transfer her membership to the Orrville Club. The next meeting July 26 will feature guest speaker Deb Jenkins sharing about Boys Village. Guest speaker Amberly Wolf, from First National Bank, spoke to the group about her experiences with Leadership Orrville (LO), now in its eighth year. She explained “the 10 month program involves 20 individuals, both male and female. Dave Lehman, of Mennonite Mutual, and Amy Mast, of Wayne College, have been instrumental in the development and growth of the group based on Stephen Covey’s book Seven Steps of Leadership. Participants engage in team building activities and spend one day each month meeting as a class and visiting with various businesses and organizations within the community. Each class has a key project to complete. Past projects include beautification of the downtown area providing hangers for flowering baskets, weeding and landscaping local parks, a scoreboard for Little League, playground for the Y, leadership books for the library, and flagpoles for the schools. Although the 2011-2012 LO class is full, anyone interested in future classes should visit the Chamber’s website for an application and more information.
