WCSCC students showcase skills at National SkillsUSA conference

Three Wayne County Schools Career Center (WCSCC) students placed high at the 47th annual SkillsUSA National Skills and Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo. recently.

Winning fifth place in job interview was culinary arts student Lindsaye Evans of Smithville. She is the daughter of Phillip and Joan Evans of Marshallville.

Precision machining student Aaron Maley, of Wooster, placed in the top 10 in extemporaneous speaking. He is the son of Patrick and Marjorie Maley of Wooster.

Derwin Loverink, of Rittman, an engineering technologies student, placed 32nd in technical drafting. He competed against 443 other contestants. He is the son of Derwin and Tammy Loverink of Rittman.

Serving as voting delegate from Ohio was Andrew Woodland of Smithville. The culinary arts student helped elect Ohio’s two representatives to Regional III Vice President and National At-Large Officer.

Accompanying the group were Pamela Vorkapich, SkillsUSA adviser and senior practical nursing instructor; and co-adviser Scott Brown, who also teaches math at the career center. Brown and Vorkapich are part of the national education team. Vorkapich was judge of medical math, serves on the technical committee for medical math, and was judge for the building maintenance competition. Brown judged job skills demo and is technical chair of the medical math competition.

WCSCC school board member Susie Lawson, of Tri-County ESC, was a national judge for the job skills demonstration and assisted with the medical math competition.

The SkillsUSA Championship is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2011, there were more than 5,700 contestants in 94 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible.
