“We had a nice field of cars and the fans came out tonight,” stated General Manager Jason Flory after the races. Tonight, victory lane was graced with a first-time feature winner, someone making his first visit here and a 2011 repeat winner.
In the 410 Winged Sprints it was Grafton, W.Va.’s Andre Layfield and Dalton’s Lee Jacobs leading the pack to the green flag. Layfield jumped ahead of Jacobs on the start. The caution flew on the opening lap for Nick Patterson, who spun and collected Broc Martin and Shawn Hubler. Martin finish with damage to his race car.
When the racing resumed, it again was Layfield on the point as he was being chased by Jacobs and Jason Dolick, Danny Mumaw and Arlington, Va.’s Aaron Shaffer. Layfield would try to pull away from Jacobs, but Jacobs used the high side in turn one and two to blast down backstretch and keep the advantage minimal. An early race spin by Chris Smith would erase any advantage Layfield had over the field. Jacobs again put his 410 Winged Sprint Car up against the guardrail in turns one and two to try to slip past Layfield, but was unable to make the pass.
As Layfield held a comfortable lead, last week’s feature winner Mumaw would start working his way through the field and on lap 13 would power into third place. At the blistering pace Layfield was running, he was maneuvering lapped traffic like a pro. Mumaw would catch Jacobs and on lap 14 dipped under Jacobs for second place and set his eyes on Layfield. As the leaders would slice inside and out of lapped traffic it appeared Mumaw was catching Layfield as the laps clicked off. At one point, Layfield narrowly split two back markers to regain his lead over Mumaw. On lap 20, Mumaw was still driving as hard as he could to catch Layfield. As the checker flag flew, it was Layfield coming home victorious over Mumaw, Jacobs, Dolick and Crabtree. Heat race winners were Dolick and Mumaw.
In the Super Late Models it was Zanesville’s Shane McLoughlin jumping out to the lead over David Liles, Travis Menshing, Ryan Markham and Wellsburg, W. Va.’s Cory Conley. McLoughlin would power out to a lead, but the racing behind him was tight as several cars were pressing forward. On lap 5, sixth-running Conley would retire to the infield with mechanical issues. Multi-time Wayne County Speedway track champion Markham caught Liles and started applying pressure. He stuck his car under Liles and motored past, setting sail for the leader. The running order out front remained the same, but a door-handle-to-door-handle battle for fifth place, which saw eighth-starting Rick Armstrong duel with 10th-starting Mark Gardiner. Armstrong tried to hold off Gardiner but Gardiner was able to drive in hard under Armstrong and pass him clean for fifth place.
As the race wound down, Markham would still try to close the distance to McLoughlin. Markham would come up just short and as the checker flag flew it was McLoughlin, Markham, Liles, JR Gentry and Gardiner. This was McLoughlin’s second feature win at WCS this season. Winning heat races were Liles and Conley.
In the Tri-State Modifieds, it was Jesse Wisecarver who led the 18-car field down to the green flag. His lead would be short lived as Jess Hartman would slip past him for the lead and try to run away from the field. On lap five, Wisecarver wasn’t giving up as he was pasted to Hartman’s rear bumper applying heavy pressure. On lap 10, Hartman held his lead over Wisecarver, Mark Gardiner, Darrick Hubbard and ninth-starting Mark Dickson.
As the leaders remained the same, all eyes were on the race cars of M. Dickson and 10th-starting Kevin Morehouse as they were moving forward. A mid-race caution flew which bunched the field, but it didn’t matter as Hartman would just blast out to a lead again. Wisecarver attempted a late race push but came up short. Coming home victorious was Hartman over Wisecarver, Gardiner, M. Dickson and Morehouse. Heat race winners were Hubbard, Hartman and Gardiner. Larry Kugel won the B-Main.
In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks Rich Frame and Jeremy Lynch led the 23-car starting field down to the green flag. On lap two, Frame would duck under Lynch to take lead with Glen Underwood, Paul Whitten and Chad Craver rounding out the top five. An early race caution would fly from Underwood who made contact with the front stretch guardrail. Setting a blazing pace as he raced through the field was tenth starting Brandon Gardner who made it to second place by lap ten. Gardner would look to the high side then slice under Frame looking for any opening to make a pass. Frame was undaunted as Gardner would stick his nose under frame as they would dive into the turns. Each time, Frame would pull away ever so slightly and hold a narrow advantage.
A late race caution flew for a spin. As the race was under caution, second place Gardner had mechanical issues and had to be towed off the track thus handing second over to Lynch. As the green flag dropped, the racing was intense for second place. Lynch, Craver and seventh-starting Don Baney would drag race down the back stretch and as they got into turn three, they were three wide. Craver slipped past Lynch through the middle but as they raced down the front straight, Baney would overtake Craver for second. Baney tried to pressure Frame, but was unable to make the pass. At the line it was Frame for his first ever feature win. He was followed by Baney, Craver, Lynch and 16th-starting Canode. Winning heat races were Craver, Underwood and Gardner.
