Before the rides, game and food vendors opened for business and the competitions and contests got underway, the Wayne County Fair Board marked the opening of the 162nd Wayne County Fair with a solemn flag raising ceremony and a moment of silence in memory of the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

As members of the 555th Honors Detachment raised the American flag and a 9/11 commemorative flag to the top of the flagpole and then solemnly lowered it to half-staff in memory of the victims of Sept. 11, the a cappella quartet Sweet Spirit lead the crowd gathered at the Wayne County Fairgrounds pavilion in singing the National Anthem.

The flag remained at half-staff Sept. 10 and 11 in honor and memory of those lost on 9/11. A moment of silence was also observed at 1 p.m. Sept. 11 in their honor.

Before pausing for a moment of silence in memory of the victims of 9/11, uniformed veterans posted flags representing the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines, as well as a POW/MIA flag.

In addition to the 555th Honors Detachment, members of local veterans groups as well as members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office took part in the ceremony.
