Gandee gives overview of Senior Olympics

Robert Gandee, director of the Tri-County Senior Olympics.

The Orrville Lions Club met Sept. 13 in the community room of Dunlap Community Hospital. Lions were reminded about the last highway cleanup Saturday, Sept. 17, at 9 a.m., meeting at the antique shop on Route 57. Thanks were offered to those who volunteered to help plant 29 trees between the elementary and middle schools, with thanks to the fire department for watering after the initial planting. Two large rocks etched with the Lions logo are now in place at the site.

Robert Gandee, director of the Tri-County Senior Olympics, shared about the national, state, and local Senior Olympics, which began in 1980. Seniors, 50-100 years of age, compete in a variety of activities from archery to volleyball. Competitions are between athletes within five year age intervals (50-54, 55-59, etc.). Gandee shared some examples of senior athletes. “Byron Fike, at age 72, ran one mile in six minutes four seconds. Bill Simmons, from Akron, was photographed in mid-air during a long jump and became the photo on the cover of a magazine.” Cleveland will host summer games in 2013. Qualifiers are usually held during the even years, with games during the odd years. Medals and ribbons are awarded to winning athletes. Registration is through assistant director and Lion Garth Schoffman.

The next morning meeting of the Orrville Lions Club will be Sept. 27, at 7:45 a.m., with Dave Smith, director of Medway, addressing the group. The next evening meeting will take place Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., and will tour Kelby’s, a custom gun manufacturer. The public is always welcome. Contact Kathi Bond for more information at 330-683-1482.
