Pat McCoy

Pat G. McCoy, 77, of Wooster, died Sept. 23, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Pat was born March 17, 1934, into a large Irish Catholic family in Forest Hills, Pa., in a neighborhood called “mucklerat” by many of the locals. The name comes from the muckle that was the slag from the coal mines. Anyone who worked the mines was called a mucklerat. A son of the late Vincent F. and Alice Rose McCoy, he married Mary E. Chenevey on Nov. 24, 1956.

Pat graduated from Wooster High School in 1952. After working for a year on pipeline construction, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served with the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from 1953-55. Upon his discharge from the Army, he worked at Hagan Controls, Orrville, from 1956 until it was purchased by Westinghouse Corporation. Pat remained with Westinghouse until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of the Orrville American Legion for 25 years and was treasurer of the Wooster Memorial Day parade for many years. He was a life member of both the 11th Airborne Division Association and the Wayne County Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association and the Descendants of the World War I 80th Infantry Division.

Pat coached little league baseball and was pack master of an Orrville Cub Scout pack. He loved history and was an avid World War II buff. He was a devoted Notre Dame football fan and loved the Cleveland Browns, Cavs, and Indians. He enjoyed traveling, visiting many foreign countries, especially the land of his Irish ancestors. Pat and Mary took up scuba diving and spent many memorable times in the Caribbean.

The main sources of happiness and pride in his life were his wife, children, and grandchildren, serving as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, and his Irish heritage.

Pat’s family would like to thank the following: doctors, nurses, and staff of the oncology and urology departments of the Cleveland Clinic, especially Dr. Paul Masci for his compassionate and excellent care; the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County, true angels in disguise; the 82nd Airborne Division Association; and all the friends and family who sent him their prayers and good wishes. Special thanks to his personal caregiver and son, John.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary, are children, Jeannie (Kevin) Wilson of Sterling, Patty (Kurt) Sullivan of Asheboro, N.C., and John (Tammy) McCoy of Smithville; grandchildren, Andrea (Matt) Painting, David Wilson, Korey, Ryan, and Patrick Sullivan, Tyler and Alex McCoy; and sister, Evelyn (Jerry) O’Brien of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Rita Caputo and Valeria Hasson; and brothers, Vincent Jr., William, and Thomas McCoy.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Sept. 30, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wooster, with Father Christopher Trenta officiating. Interment will follow in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman. Friends may call Sept. 29, from 5-8 p.m., at Auble Funeral Home, Orrville.

Online registry and expressions of condolence may be made at http://www.aublefuneralhome.com.
