Heidi Steiner, Wooster City School District licensed school nurse, has been selected to receive the 2011 Outstanding School Nurse Achievement Award given by the American School Health Association.
According to district officials, the award honors a school nurse who has demonstrated exceptional service in the area of school health services.
The award will be presented to Steiner when members of the American School Health Association hold their annual meeting in Louisville, Ky. Oct. 12-15.
“I’m thrilled to have had a very long and eventful career as a professional school nurse,” Steiner said.
“Now to be recognized for it by school health professionals across the nation is an amazing honor,” she added.
Steiner has been a school nurse with the district for the past 17 years.
According to Wooster City School District Superintendent Michael Tefs, in addition to her day-to-day duties as a school nurse, “Steiner’s many accomplishments include lobbying for children’s health in Ohio, organizing health and wellness initiatives for students and staff, implementing annual health screenings for all students in grades K-9 and recently initiating a support group for parents of children with Type 1 diabetes.”
In addition to her duties with the district, for the past 11 years Steiner has also served as an adjunct professor at Ashland University, where she supervises nurses in their practicum and the final course required for school nurse licensure. For several years she also taught health safety and nutrition of early childhood education at the university.
Steiner has also served the nursing profession as president of the Ohio Association of School Nurses and as an officer of both the American School Health Association and the Ohio Association of School Nurses.
“Keeping students healthy while they are in the Wooster City Schools is an important priority for us and is essential to providing a world-class education,” said Tefs.
“It’s not an easy task, but with the vision and hard work of nurses like Mrs. Steiner, we’ve been able to educate students and parents on how to prevent illnesses and stay healthy, and come prepared daily ready to engage with our faculty and academic programming,” Tefs added.
This is the second year in a row that Steiner has been recognized for her achievements.
In 2010 Steiner was named the Ohio School Nurse of the Year by the Ohio Association of School Nurses.
The Ohio Association of School Nurses’ Nurse of the Year award is the highest honor a school nurse can receive and recognizes a nurse’s contribution to school health through leadership, creative programming, research and community and professional involvement.
Qualifications for the award include being a registered nurse in the state of Ohio, a school nurse for at least five years, a member of the Ohio Association of School Nurses and having a licensure with the Ohio Department of Education as a school nurse.
