God Committee met with Tracy Smith, teacher, to discuss the renovation. A Wayne County Community Foundation Grant made the renovation possible. The project included new energy-efficient windows, a new door, carpet, paint, window treatments and upgraded restrooms.
Dana Keirstead conducted the dedication ceremony of the schoolroom. He introduced teacher Tracy Smith. Smith thanked the historical society, stated that it was brighter and warmer, and that the parents and children are pleased with the changes.
She presented a picture that was made by the students. Rev. O.J. Thompson was recognized and presented with a wooden key to the church, made by Curt Deibel. Rev. Thompson is retiring as a member of The Historic Church of God committee.
Rev. Thompson, a former pastor of The Historic Church of God congregation, has planned and led the World Day of Prayer and the Veterans Day observances for the Smithville community over the years.
Rev. Keirstead led the prayer of dedication. Everyone joined in singing “School Days, School Days.”
President Harold Downey conducted a short business meeting.
Acquisitions co-chair Linda Platt stated that 44 different people have donated more than 270 items to the historical society so far this year. Membership chair Pat Keirstead presented life membership certificates to Beverly Ramseyer and Diana Carpenter.
Sunday, Oct. 16 is our next open house. All buildings will be open. In addition, we will be making apple butter and using the outdoor oven to bake bread and other items.
Members will prepare the apples on Saturday, Oct. 15, starting at 3 p.m. in the reception center.
Nominating committee for electing officers are Harlene Steiner, chair, with Bob Studer and Joe Irvin. Nita Downey introduced Marilyn Ferguson who presented, Meet the Ohio President’s Wives. Ferguson gave interesting insights into the life of each wife of the United States presidents from Ohio.
Ruth Peterman and Linda Platt served refreshments. Nov. 7 is the next meeting at 7 p.m. in The Historic Church of God.
Program focus will be The History of Sheller Meats. Sam Sheller and family will present the program. Nancy King and Patty McFadden are in charge of refreshments.
