The Wooster City School District (WCSD) has achieved the highest rating possible in Ohio. They are one of a few in Ohio to reach “Excellent with Distinction.” Every teacher, every maintenance person, every administrator, every clerical deserves thanks and recognition. When you reach World Class in Education it can be near to the same as six (6) sigma in industry. Six sigma illustrates the industry has one error out of one million actions.

The government of the state of Ohio has said, cut the money to this district and every district in Ohio. WCSD will lose $4 million starting August 2012. Wooster City passed a levy last year that would obtain a little over $6 million from property tax starting August 2012. The levy is nullified by the state action. The state of Ohio has stated the school district must do the same job with 10 percent less. Consider losing 10 percent of your income each year for several years. The items around your house would not be repaired, eating out would cease, grocery shopping would mean buying less. Living condition changes drastically. The same thing will happen to 4,000 children and each will be hurt.

The school can drop athletics, music, arts, physical education, debate, increase the number of children in a class, use older books and material, do not use materials, teachers will buy materials used by a few children out of their pay, tell the parents they must pay for the education materials, drop language and others, cut school days, contract outside, drop activities that involve bussing, etc. In each we hurt children.

Our legislature took a three percent raise this year and last year and will take one next year. Our governor did the same and gave raises and recently bonus from 30 percent early in the year and up to12 percent of pay. The same people who radically hurt the children of Ohio have increased their pay.

If we want to continue to be the best we must hurt people or hurt children? We have no choice if we want a six sigma school, if we want a future for our children. The legislature has not created jobs to earn tax money, they will keep hurting others and will take more next year and then the same in future years. We have a vote coming in November, please think before voting.

The Boston Consulting Group projects by the year 2012 we will be three million short of skilled workers. At a time of high unemployment we will have a labor shortage. Our Congress and our Ohio legislature will demand we bring in three million skilled workers from overseas. Manufacturers rely on technology-intensive production. We are destroying our children’s education with a true paradox but do not worry China, India, Sweden and many others know the value of education. America is near last place in math and science. Our Ohio government likes this position?

I am aware of a corporation in Italy who is working to bring 200 jobs to America from China. Would you make this move knowing, like Hi-tech has discovered, we do not have sufficient skilled labor?
