Seasonal bounty at Local Roots

Fall may mean the end of the harvest season, but you can still find a colorful array of fresh local produce at Local Roots Market and Café well into the winter.

Look for these locally-grown, nutrient-rich favorites at the market:

- Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts

- Onions, garlic, leeks

- Potatoes and sweet potatoes

- Squash of many shapes, sizes, and colors

- Carrots, parsnips, turnips, and rutabagas (all of which taste sweeter after frost)

- Dark, leafy greens like kale, spinach, chard

- A variety of apples and fresh cider

- Popcorn

- Dried beans

Other fall-flavor favorites at Local Roots include toasted pumpkin chevre from Mackenzie Creamery, apple-cinnamon and pumpkin-spice syrups from Simple Products, cornmeal from Covered Bridge Gardens, and rolled oats from Stutzman Farms.

Stop by the Local Roots Café for lunch and enjoy what’s in season, cooked to perfection by the café team. Current specials include black bean burgers, the harvest panini sandwich, quiche featuring seasonal vegetables, and hearty soups. Then savor a dessert from the bakery case, loaded with the warming spices and fruits of fall.

As a year-round market for locally-produced foods and other agricultural products, Local Roots Market is located at 140 S. Walnut St. in Wooster. The market is open weekdays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the café is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Membership is not required to shop.
