Once upon a time a fair young maiden proved she was a real princess and worthy of marrying a prince by detecting a tiny pea tucked beneath her mattress by the queen.

While most of us are familiar with the story line of the classic fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, chances are we haven’t seen it presented quite like members of the Wooster High School Drama Club will retell the story when they present the musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress.

According to director Todd Patterson, “if you thought you knew the story of The Princess and the Pea, you may be in for a surprise.”

“Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal alter posthaste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?” said Patterson.

After taking in the wonderful songs and hilarious twists and turns woven into this spin on a familiar childhood story, “chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again,” said Patterson.

According to Patterson, the cast of characters includes Princess Winnifred (Natalyn Baisden), Dauntless the Drab (Joseph Bruch), Lady Larken (Bethany Marty), Sir Harry (Demry Zimmerman), Queen Aggravain (Kayla Villeagas), King Sextimus the Silent (Kyle Sherrill), Minstrel (Jake Riley), Jester (Kimberly Sibilia) and Wizard (Stephen Dulaney), along with a cast full of knights, lords, ladies in waiting, servants and musicians.

Wooster High School’s production of Once Upon a Mattress is being directed by Patterson, who will be joined by the talents of pit orchestra conductor Dan Adams, pianist Tom Long, vocal director Emily Patterson, choreographer Stephanie Musselman, technical director Timothy Gallagher and student director Katie Redmond.

Performances of Once Upon a Mattress are scheduled for Nov. 12 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. in the Wooster High School Performing Arts Center.

Tickets for the production will be on sale at the Wooster High School Athletic Office beginning Nov. 7.

Patrons of the Drama Club are entitled to reserve their tickets before the general public.
